18th September 2000

It has been a very busy summer for HMS so we have not had much time to update the website! We have been busy with events at Kings Lynn (the birthplace of explorer George Vancouver), Kirby Hall, Portland Castle and the Captain Cook Memorial Museum at Whitby. Thanks particularly to the good turnout of members who made it to Whitby on 16/17 September despite the UK fuel crisis.

Our preliminary list of HMS events for 2001 has been published.
The trustees of the Ben Burgess Nelson Memorabilia collection intend to provide a museum relating to the life and times of Lord Nelson at 26, South Quay, Great Yarmouth. Anyone wishing to help with funding should contact the Appeals Office, 38 Europe Way, Marineau Lane, Norwich, NT1 2EN.

The Hull University 'Bounty and Bligh' Symposium scheduled to take place 3rd to 7th July has been postponed until 2001.
19th June 2000 'Above and Under Hatches' by James Gardner is the latest in the series of original sailors memoirs published by Chatham. Unlike most of the sailors' memoirs of the Nelsonic navy, Gardner's was not written for publication: it was purely intended for the entertainment of his family and friends, and did not see publication until long after his death. As a result potential problems of libel did not constrain him to bite his tongue when it came to opinions of individuals, high and low, in the naval service. Order your copy now from our Bookshop.
11th June 2000 The UK National Maritime Museum have launched the Journal for Maritime Research (JMR). JMR is the first electronic journal in the field of maritime research. From contemporary issues to the political, economic, cultural and social aspects of maritime history, JMR publishes innovative, multi-disciplinary research on maritime subjects. An article of interest to readers is some research in progress on 'The Sick and Hurt Board and the health of seamen, c. 1700 - 1806'.

12th May 2000 The 'Grog Conundrum' and 'Revolutionary Calendar' added to the Nelsons Navy section, together with a fascinating update to 'Santa Cruz and Nelsons Arm' from a local of Tenerife.
9th May 2000 The BBC are showing the BBC 2 History Zone film 'Myths of Nelsons Navy' in the UK on Saturday 13th May at 8.05pm. The film aims to dispell the popular 'rum, sodomy and the lash' view of Nelsons Navy with a much different picture of a well fed navy where victory could ensure a fabulous profit from prize money. HMS did the historical recontructions for the flim.
